Is Meta's Muse Safe for Selling on Facebook Marketplace?
Meta's Muse AI agent gave a seller's home address to a buyer without asking. Here's what happened, why it matters, what our data says about the moments AI gets wrong, and how to use AI on Marketplace without losing control.
- Short answer: Muse is fine for small, casual sales if you make it ask before every reply. Don't let it act on its own.
- What went wrong: Muse gave a seller's address to a buyer and agreed to meet, without asking him.
- Our data: about 1 in 5 Marketplace conversations reach "Where are you?" or "When can I come?". Those are the exact moments an AI needs your rules.
The short answer
Muse is Meta's new AI agent. It can talk to buyers for you and even negotiate. (CNN tried it out here.)
That's useful. But in September, Muse gave a seller's address to a stranger and set up a meetup without asking him first.
So here's our advice: use AI on Marketplace, but only AI that follows your rules. It should answer the easy questions on its own and hand the risky ones back to you.
What happened with Muse
In late September, a tech reviewer in Toronto listed a keyboard for CA$15 and gave Muse "always allow" permission to handle the buyers.
According to reports from the Associated Press, Moneywise and Malwarebytes, Muse:
- agreed to sell it for CA$10, below his price,
- gave the buyer his street address,
- when the buyer arrived after 9pm, replied "Yep I'm here!"
He had no idea. Nobody came down, and the buyer left after driving half an hour.
Muse later said the address came from an auto-reply template he had approved, but admitted he "never said yes" to handing it out. Meta says it's looking into it.
Why it went wrong
The AI wasn't "evil." It did what it thought would close the sale.
The problem is that nobody told it where to stop. A good salesperson knows some things need the owner:
- giving out your home address
- agreeing to a time to meet
- saying yes to a price
An AI doesn't know that unless you tell it.
The risky moments happen a lot
You might think "where are you?" is a rare question. It isn't.
Based on our data from Facebook Marketplace conversations, here's what buyers ask about:

"Is it still available?" is easy. Any AI can answer it.
But about 1 in 5 conversations get to "Where are you?" or "When can I come?" That's exactly where Muse went wrong. If you sell a lot, that's several of these moments every day.
Why sellers want AI anyway
If AI can get it wrong, why use it at all? Because buyers don't message when it suits you.

In our data, more than half of buyer messages arrive outside weekday working hours. Nearly 1 in 5 arrive after 9pm or before 7am.
If nobody answers, the buyer messages the next seller. (And many buyers go quiet anyway. Here's why buyers ghost after "Is this still available?")
So the answer isn't "no AI." It's AI with rules.
How to use Muse safely
If you want to use Muse, a few simple settings make a big difference:
- Make it ask you before every reply. Don't give it "always allow". That's the setting that caused the problem above.
- Never let it share your address. Meet in a public place, or share the address yourself once you trust the buyer.
- Don't let it agree to a time. You confirm meetups yourself.
- Set your lowest price before you start. Don't let it decide the price.
- Read the chat before you go anywhere. Make sure you know what was agreed.
This works well if you sell a few things a month. If you get dozens of messages a day, checking every reply is a full-time job, and that's the job you wanted the AI to do.

Meta's tools are free and built in. For selling an old lamp, they're enough. (Is Meta AI enough for Marketplace sellers? Our honest answer.)
If Marketplace is how you make money, you need more control.
Muse can also list items for you. For a full comparison of who should post, renew and answer for you, including hiring a virtual assistant, see Muse vs. a VA vs. an AI agent.
How GetReplyNow handles the risky moments
GetReplyNow answers your Marketplace buyers in about a minute, day or night. But it's built around one idea: you decide where it stops.
- It only knows what you tell it. It uses your listing and the info you write down. Leave your exact address out and it can't give it away.
- It never makes up a price. If a price or fact isn't written down, it tells the buyer it'll check.
- It doesn't make up meetups. It only books a time if you've connected your own booking calendar. Otherwise, when a buyer wants to come, it hands them over the way you choose: your phone number, your booking link, or "the seller will confirm a time."
- You decide what a hot lead is. When a buyer is ready, you get an email with the full conversation, so you step in at the right moment.
- You set stop rules. Tell it which topics to leave to you, and it stays quiet and lets you know. (See how smart conditions work.)
- It follows up. Buyers who go quiet get one well-timed message, and only if they're worth chasing.
The AI handles the easy questions. You handle the part that needs a human.
